On Saturday, the New York Cosmos punctuated their return to competitive outdoor league play for the first time since 1984 with a 2-1 victory over the Fort Lauderdale Strikers.
The current revival of the Cosmos plays on the campus of Hofstra University, where their namesake predecessors played for two seasons in the early 1970's. That team, which began play in 1971 and folded in 1984-1985, later starred Pele, Giorgio Chinaglia, and Franz Beckenbauer, and became the most famous name in North American soccer history.
The Cosmos are returning to play this fall in the North American Soccer League (NASL), itself in a revival after ceasing play following the 1984 season. The current NASL is a second-division league below Major League Soccer (MLS).
