The Baltimore Redbirds, the local entry in the Cal Ripken Collegiate Baseball League (CRCBL), proved that persistence prevails as they beat the Bethesda Big Train last summer for the league championship. Prior to 2012, Baltimore had fallen to the Big Train for three straight seasons in the deciding game.

This summer they return as defending champions, while to the south in the District the DC Grays return for their second year in the collegiate wooden bat circuit. The Grays play at Gallaudet's Hoy Field in Washington while the Redbirds call Calvert Hall's Carl Crispino Stadium in Towson home.

Both teams open their 2013 slate on Thursday evening. The Grays host the Cal Ripken League's latest entry, the Baltimore Presstman Cardinals. The Cardinals program dates back to 1962 and this season will be their first in the CRCBL.

The Redbirds will host the Big Train at Calvert Hall.
